Grandaddy’s Trunk

Granddaddy’s Trunk
@David Pugh/Rick Lang

V1
In 1897 grandaddy started life
At an early age learned to read an write
Always helping others, he had a heart of gold
Dreamed of driving Model T’s when he was just ten years old

V2
Just a lad granddad learned to work with his hands
Found some old boards in the barn and came up with a plan
Designed a lovely wooden trunk with paper and pen
One sturdy and strong to make his dad proud of him

Chorus
That old wooden trunk is with us to this day
Filled with treasures Grandaddy stored away
Get the urge to go through it every now and then
Makes me smile for a while when I think of him

V3
Went into the attic just the other day
Found granddaddy’s trunk, wiped the cobwebs away
Opened up the latches took a peek inside
As I went through the treasures tears welled in my eyes

V4
Black and white of he and grandma on their wedding day
Prince Albert tobacco cans, gold pocket watch and chain
Granddads old army clothes, dog tags from the war
Medal of Honor he won on foreign shores
